There are thousands of processed foods stocking store shelves that contain genetically modified organisms, or GMOs. These products don’t only harm our environment, but they can also have detrimental effects on our own health. Our partnership with the Organic Fertilizers Producers Community is another way we’re reaching out to the organic world.
Antioxidants are important nutrients found in organic fresh fruits and vegetables and have been shown to impart multiple health benefits, including the prevention of many cancers. Many consumers choose organic produce because they desire to lower their exposure to the pesticides found on commercial produce. Nearly 70 percent of all processed foods contain GM ingredients, and choosing organic is the only guarantee that food is free of genetic modification.
Even though the organic farming industry has grown rapidly worldwide, organic agriculture still makes up less than 1% of the world's farming acreage "with 37.2 million hectares planted worldwide across 162 countries." However, despite there being a high consumer demand for organic foods, there are still not enough organic farmers to support the need.
The United States is the largest single market for organic food. Recently, the U.S. organic industry reached $31.5 billion in sales, a 9.5% increase from the previous year. Americans get most of their organic foods from developing countries. According to an article on Sustainable Business, the International Federation of Organic Agriculture Movements (IFOAM) reported that organic food is now a $63 billion industry worldwide.
